10 BEST BBC SHOWS YOU MUST WATCH IN 2020
Updated: Jul 7, 2020
The BBC produces some amazing TV shows, with high-quality dramas and comedies airing on the BBC in recent years. Here is a list of top 10 series that are worth watching..
1 . FLEABAG (IMDB 8.7/10)
A dry-witted woman, known only as Fleabag, has no filter as she navigates life and love in London while trying to cope with tragedy. The angry, grief-riddled woman tries to heal while rejecting anyone who tries to help her, but Fleabag continues to keep up her bravado through it all. Comic actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge stars as the titular character on the series, which is based on Waller-Bridge's 2013 one-woman show of the same name.
2 . SHERLOCK HOLMES ( IMDB 9.1/10 )
From the astonishing and astounding genius of Sherlock to the uncommon commonness and perfection of John, and most importantly, their remarkable, incandescent and unbreakable bond of friendship, which is much more than just friendship, this show has it all. It has the thrill of the chase, the mysteries for all the world to solve and the truth for everyone to see (but only one person can, You Know Who), it can make you laugh and unexpectedly, can make your eyes filled with tears on occasions and it just carries you with its flow and you don't realise when you fell in love with it. It is not a show with just thrilling moments and acts of brilliance, it has the element of character flaws which both normal and extraordinary people have and how they compliment each other to fight against the demons both outside and inside, and develop an unprecedented bond which is just so worth-loving and awe-inspiring. It has a sort of new-ness in its concept, it has comedy, a touch of drama and lots of emotions (which are in my opinion the standout part of it). So...just watch it and there's no way you're not gonna love it.
3. LINE OF DUTY
( IMDB 8.6/10 )
From the very first season -- first episode -- even the way they use the camera to give the feel of being filmed live -- you know this is something amazing and that it's different than anything you have ever seen. The characters are all flawed. They all have good and bad aspects and some do grow and change a bit as seasons progress. Each season deals with a new theme for the AC-12 Unit (the equivalent of US Police Internal Affairs division - the department that overseas and investigates corruption within the police department). Seasons have overarching themes, so watch them in order. One of my favorite things is watching the amazing way the AC-12 conduct their interviews with suspects starting with wide general questions and slowly weaving the facts and encircling their 'prey' in a snare of lies of their own making. Like any British TV crime drama of this caliber: you have to pay close attention. Favorite line: "There's only one thing we're concerned with here, son, and that's bent coppers." Use the Closed Captioning so you don't miss the conversations because there is a LOT going on. Totally re watchable because of the dense plot lines. This is NOT an Action Thriller (though there is action) but more of a slow burn, riveting, roller coaster ride. The producers of this series seem to have deliberately compressed the seasons into fewer episodes than the usual 8-10 so that the tension is ratcheted up a notch. Everyone has something to hide and a secret agenda in Line of Duty. You will love it.
4. KILLING EVE
( IMDB 8.3/10 )
Eve's life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be when she started. She is a bored, very smart, MI5 security officer who is very desk-bound. Villanelle is a very talented killer, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse, each woman equally obsessed with the other as Eve is tasked with hunting down the psychopathic assassin. Sarah Barnett, BBCA president, says, " `Killing Eve' stands out in a sea of scripted stories as refreshingly entertaining and great fun."
5. What we Do in the Shadows ( IMDB 8.4/10 )
The vampire comedy from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement will return to the Disney-owned cable network in 2020. FXissinking its teeth into more of the vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows. ... The mockumentary follows a group of vampires and their human familiars on Staten Island.
6. SEVEN WORLDS ONE PLANET ( IMDB 9.4/10 )
To say this is incredible is an understatement! No animal documentary has ever captured my attention like this one did. The landscape and up close and personal view of the animals are truly second to none!! The camera work, the narrator, the vast array of animals shown, and everything in between was done perfectly! My husband and I watched one episode per day with our four kids (ages 6-14) while "quarantined" from the Corona virus and I can honestly say, EVERY one of us said that this was truly the silver lining the whole experience.
7. LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX ( IMDB 8.3/10 )
Interesting, delightful, and so ordinary in a wonderfully complex, simple, human, and thoughtful look into families, getting old, loving, combining differences, yet all with similar challenges and feelings. Well written with a superb cast made for a believable story on many levels. Love is messy, life is messy no matter education, age, or socioeconomical status. or sexual orientation. Warm and fuzzy in all the right places with openness, priority and families rising above differences and then some.
8. THE OFFICE
( IMDB 8.9/10 )
Very few show can make such a great connection with the audience. Each and every character gets bonded to such a great extent that it feels like we know them personally. The fight between Dwight and Jim is the most that one missed when the show ended. The love between Jim and Pam is what would bring you smile as well as tears into your eyes, when their marriage was at the brink of an end. So sad that they were never called the "Jam" in the show. The love between Angela and Dwight is also the same. You cannot imagine that amount of satisfaction one will get they finally got married. Its the true love that Angela always desired. Kevin and Oscar are the accountant buddies that no one could forget. The childishness of Kevin is what made him so much adorable and Oscar, the genius guy in the whole office. The friendship between Phyllis and Stanley. The love affair between Kelly and Ryan, who never really cared for her unless she was gone and he came to know her value. Toby, the silent HR, who could be the alleged Scranton Strangler (but he is not). He was there whenever anyone about to get fired for foolish reasons. May one day he finds a woman that would truly love her. But no-one matches when it comes to Creed Bratton. It is so good that Devon got fired instead of him. He is one of the character that would missed the most. I really cannot stress enough how much funny the guy and his sudden appearances is the treat you get is occasional episodes, I guess best thing come in small quantity. Eirn is the second best receptionist after Pam. Seriously no-one beats Pam, her smile is the best, full of positive energy. Andy, the nard dog. He is one of the emotional guy that one could find but good at heart and finally Michael Scott. Oh! Michael Scott. He is the best. No-one, No-one can beat him, he is the best. He is the life of the show. The presence of his character has a radiance of positive energy. He doesn't consider himself as a boss in a office, he considers his office as his home and the people working with him as his family members You can never be sad around that man. The show highlights emotions, comedy, teaches us to sacrifice, finding true love. We have seen enemies become friends, co-workers getting married to each other. Through the course of nine seasons, it's a journey, a journey that never could be forgotten. Hats off to Michael Scott for his sheer loyalty to Dunder Mifflin, Dwight Kurt Schrute, Jim Halpert, Pam Beesly, Angelan Martin, Kevin Malone, Oscar, Phyllis, Stanely, Darryl, Kelly, Meredith, Toby, Creed, Erin, Andy and everyone else made the show legend.
9. DOCTOR WHO ( IMDB 8.6/10 )
David Tennant is the greatest "Doctor" of the entire "Doctor Who" series and It's silly how the show believes they can replace an extrordinary actor: everything felt so alive with him acting and making the adventures feel like they're actually happening: stronger than their attempts at making sci-fi visuals look real. His powerful voice, his eyes, his very presence makes the foundations of your heart tremble before his astounding and brilliant talent. I can't watch the other seasons ahead, because they overwrite everything he did: as if all his heroics had never happened, and to me - they did happen and once the show transfers to Matt Smith, I quit watching Doctor Who. I'll admit, the 9th doctor did wonderful as well and did all he could for the show before making way for the calvery. (David.) I've been a lover and a hardcore sci-fi fan for this show for long as I can remember. Always brings tears to my eyes with every episode, and not only that: the writers that allowed the magic to unfold, are simply brilliant for each episode, being so creative and every aspect being peculiar - which in turn, makes it one heck of a thrill ride! Love David Tennant, he's like an idle to me and his positivity towards whatever circumstance is marvelous: can't get enough of the jolly fellow!
10. LUTHER (IMDB 8.5/10)
The series has been really well produced to keep you on your toes and keep you questioning. A true British Crime drama that doesn’t disappoint when depicting murder scenes and bludgeoned bodies. Every actor/actress in Luther plays their part incredibly and Idris Elba is phenomenal when acting as Luther and definitely deserves an award for his talent. I highly recommend anyone to give this a go as you’d be missing out if you didn’t.
